Water saving tips from Make Water Famous

As long, hot summers continue around the world the team at Make Water Famous discussed our own top water-saving tips.

We all know the classics: turning off the tap when we brush our teeth; using a bucket to catch excess water in the shower; only washing full loads of clothes or dishes.

But what about our SWSB - Secret Water Saving Behaviour?

The Make Water Famous team revealed all to each other and came up with a list of favourites as well as highlighting the big hitters, to help us all save water, energy, and money this summer.

1. "If it's yellow...

Let it mellow! If it's brown flush it down." Who else's family already uses this ages-old water-saving approach? Think twice before flushing that urine, even with a dual-flush system. Dual-flush loos use between 4-6 litres of clean water with every flush, whereas an old toilet can use up to 13 litres.

2. Saving power in the shower

Reducing shower times to four minutes can be one of the best ways to reduce water and energy use. UK water company trials with a household water event metering technology called Waterfall, from EC Creative, show that on average, people spend five minutes in the shower, which uses around 60 litres of water. Installing an eco-showerhead could save water by 25 per cent.

Waterfall trials reveal that if an average household reduced their overall water consumption by 25%, it could mean a saving of up to £105 on water bills and, because 70% of the water we use is heated, up to £650 on energy bills. Look out for the Waterfall technology being rolled out to households in the future.

3. Seek the leaks and plug the gaps

Waterfall has also calculated that 30% of properties in their trials waste water through leaky loos and dripping taps that households may not even be aware of. If these leaks are easy to fix it is a great way to reduce consumption and save money too.

4. Stop. Think. Sanitise

When water is scarce hand sanitiser can in used instead of hand washing, which can use up to 79 litres of water a day. This nifty hand sanitising trick became very popular when the city of Cape Town, South Africa, was facing their 'day zero' water crisis in 2018 and residents where tasked with reducing their water consumption to 80 litres of water per person, per day.

5. Can it in the kitchen

Keep a watering can in the kitchen to save water from cooking or preparing foods and use it for watering thirsty plants. Leave that lawn alone though! It will be fine, trust us.

6. Get 'appy with it

Knowledge is power. Turn your water reduction goals into a fun game with your housemates or family. Apps such as Water Footprint Calculator, GetWaterFit (UK), and Dropcountr (US) and are free to download and help users to understand their water behaviours better.

7. Over egged

It may be an odd one, but consider reusing water from boiling eggs in your kettle; or water from boiling vegetables for cooking pasta. The water is full of calcium and nutrients - and it is already heated.

8. Pot-luck

Keep a pot or saucer under plants and catch excess drips to reuse. Or go the whole hog - like one of our team - and catch the drips from the neighbour's sprinkler by placing your pots in range.

9. Your dirty car as modern art

You see a dirty car. We see a blank canvas and a water-saving hero. Gone are the days of 'wash me' messages scrawled by pranksters to the embarrassment of the owner. Unleash your inner artist with love hearts, good vibe slogans, or full on landscape drawings - on your own car that is!

10. Bottle it

No need to run the tap for cold water if you keep your refill bottle on the go at home. Just pop it in the fridge. The big win here is that it is already cold when you go out. Stay refreshed wherever you live by downloading the Refill app to find out where to fill up.
